Kalutara City

Kalutara is a city situated south of colombo and is a easy to reach tourist destination. This scenic city is situated in the river mouth of Kalu River which is one of the main rivers in Sri Lanka and is the reason behind the city's name. Kalu Ganga in Sinhalese means Black River and the city in the Kalu River mouth is Kalutara. Due to its strategic location Kalutara is blessed with a scenic beach.



How to Reach


Kalutara can be accessed by few ways from Colombo
  • You can simply take a bus or drive your own to Kalutara  via the A1 road. (You can use bus routes to Galle, Matara, Tangalle & etc.)
  • You can use the Dakshina Lanka highway and use Gelanigama or Dodangoda interchanges to reach Kalutara.
  • You can simply use the Coastal Railway line and Kalutara is served by 2 railway stations, Kalutara North & South.  Kalutara South being more accessible and also Katukurunda Railway station can also be used due to its proximity to Kalutara lagoon.

Places of Interest 

Calido Beach


  • This is a scenic beach where you can enjoy the environment and feel the Sunny Sri Lankan beaches.  Environment here is really nice and due to the fact the beach being close to a lagoon you can see beautiful mangroves grown along the lagoon.








Sacred Bodhi Tree 


Kalutara Bodhiya is a famous Buddhist shrine located in the city itself just next to the Kalutara Bridge. Please don't forget to visit this place as well. 

Kalutara Gangatilaka Viharaya which is just next to the Bodhi Tree contains a dageba with hollow interior which is considered to be one of a kind.

Richmond Castle Kalutara 


This is a colonial mansion which was built in a scenic location with an attractive scenery and a beautiful architecture



Apart from these you can visit many places around Kalutara city like Pahiyangala cave, Wadduwa Beach, Moragolla Beach and etc.
