Pidurangala Royal Temple 


Pidurangala is a Buddhist monastery situated very close to Sigiriya, which is is an world famous tourist destination.  Believed to be built by King Kashyapa who also built Sigiriya.  But Pidurangala contains some evidences of pre - Kashyapa era history also.



It is believed some archaeologists that the Sigiriya frescos depict princesses or concubines of King Kashyapa visiting the nearby Pidurangala temple. 

Pidurangala is very easy to reach from Colombo but since it doesn't take much time to visit this place it is advisable to arrange this trip together with a visit to Sigiriya and Dambulla. If you are willing for a long vacation you could add a safari ride to Habarana forest also.

How to Reach 


You can reach Pidurangala by coming to Inamaluwa using Ambepussa - Trincomalee Highway.  Turn to right from Inamaluwa to Kimbissa road and you can easily reach Pidurangala which is next to Sigiriya.

Wild bees can be found in this place similar to Sigiriya thus being cautious of such is advisable



Important Places to visit 


Pidurangala is situated in a small hill thus the hike to the top would be a enjoyable journey itself and it's not a harsh journey since you have to go through a forest dotted with many historic ruins also.









Once you reach the top you could see a breathtaking view of the surrounding environment. Sigiriya is clearly visible from this place which itself is a wonderful scenery.  




Pidurangala is very easy to reach from Colombo Pidurangala is very easy to reach from Colombo but apart  from these you can also see ruins of a Buddha statue and a rock inscription on the way to the top. You can also visit the Buddhist monastery at the bottom of the rock which is having quite few frescos and statues.
