Dutch Fort of Jaffna

Fort of Jaffna is a colonial building adjacent to the city of Jaffna. Which was used as an fortified place to guard the colonial interests in Jaffna which was a important hub of trade.  Fort was first built by the Portuguese General Pillippe de Oliveira in 1618 CE after subjugating the Jaffna kingdom. Later it felt to Dutch forces of Rijcklof van Goens im 1698 who enlarged the fort and rebuilt it. It went to British in 1795 and remained so untill 1795. The Fort has been a important battle ground in Sri Lankan civil war and has been under both the LTTE and the Sri Lanka Army. LTTE has extensively damaged the Fort to prevent it being retaken by Sri Lankan Army. After the end of Sri Lankan Civil war Jaffna Fort has been renovated and now open to the public. This place can offer you excellent views of the surrounding and the feel of an age gone by. Fort has been built using coral stones readily available in the area. Pooneryn Fort

Pooneryn Fort is a colonial Dutch Fort situated Kilinochchi District of Northern Sri Lanka. Situated in a peninsular separated from Jaffna Peninsula by a narrow strip of water connecting Indian Ocean and Jaffna Lagoon. This strategic location was important to prevent any possible invasion to Jaffna from Kandyan Kingdom or the Vanniyars in immediate south. The above strategic importance was identified by the Portuguese who established a fort in Pooneryn after subjugating the Jaffna Kingdom. This Fort was captured by the Dutch in 1658 AD who are responsible for the current structure. Ownership of the Fort passed down to British in 1796 AD. In 1805 British converted the Fort in to a Rest house. The fort played an important role through out Sri Lankan Civil War being exchanged hands between the Sri Lankan Army and the terrorist group of LTTE in 1991 and 2009. Isinbessagala Rajamaha Viharaya - Medawachchiya

Isinbessagala Raja Maha Viharaya is a temple located in the North Central Province of Sri Lanka close to Medawachchiya. Temples name is associated with honorable Arahat Mahinda Thero who brought Buddhism to Sri Lanka. It is believed that Arahat Mahinda landed on this place first and then went to Mihinthalaya to meet the Sri Lankan King Devanampiyathissa. Name of the place is belived to be derived from this incident and losely translates as "place where the sage landed" Some Sri Lankan buddhists believe that the temple is the location of ancient Isipathanaramaya where Lord Budhdha taught his first sermons of Dhamma.
