Neelawarai well is a natural fresh water well found in Jaffna District which never deppletes even at extreme whether conditions. Many legends are associated with the place while the most famous being the well is bottomless. How ever the latest findings have revealed that the well is extremely deep(52.5m). Some legends are also linked to Ramayana and the well is considered as sacred by the locals. Archeological Department has conducted excavations to find depth of the well and it was found that the well was 52.5m deep and the layer of water below 18.3m gets salty as it goes down. Salinity levels remains different due to a equilibrium occuring in the well. Water at the bottom was clear but sunlight does not reach due to a zone of unclear water present between m to m.
