Nine Arch Bridge - Ella


The Nine Arch Bridge is a Railway bridge in Badulla district in the Main Line of Sri Lankan Railway which links the Sri Lankan town of Badulla with Capital Colombo. Sitated between Ella and Demodara Railway stations this Bridge is also known as Bridge in the Sky. Architectural value coupled with the scenic environment draws thousands of locals and foreigners. Nine Arch Bridge is a must go to attraction in Ella.


Bridge was built during the colonial period of Sri Lanka by the British and is considered as a classic example of colonial bridges. Bridge is open for tourists and can walk over the Bridge. It is best if you could make it on time to witness the train passing over the Bridge. The area surrounding the bridge is covered with tea states and forests is provides a nice scenary.

The Bridge has been built using stone and cement without using any steel which was the norm for railway bridges in the period. Bridge consists of 9 arches and length of the bridge is 91m and the height is around 24m.

Reaching the Bridge is easy since its just a small walk from the main road, or take a Tuk from Ella. You can also reach here by walking towards Demodara Railway station from Ella railway station.
