Arugam Bay
Arugam Bay is considered to be one of the top 5 places for surfing in the world and is also very famous for its picturesque sun rise as it is situated in the Eastern coast of Sri Lanka facing Indians Ocean. Time period from March to September is considered to be the best time to visit Arugam Bay while this period is pretty crowded and finding a place to stay might be challenging.

Arugam Bay Beach also houses a sizable fishing community belonging to all 3 major ethnic groups in Sri Lanka. You can experience fishing boats and fishing communities harmoniously coexisting with tourism in the beach.
Reaching Arugam Bay
Reaching Arugam Bay is not hard you have to take A4 highway upto Pottuvil and turn to B374 road. Pottuvil is a sizable local town where you can buy basic provisions like and also provides services like ATMs and Fuel Stations. Arugam Bay area is a famous tourist area so can find many small hotels and inns suitable for accommodation but I recommend you to make prior reservations.

Apart from Arugam Bay Beach you could visit other historic places and beaches surrounding the area.
1. Muhudu Maha Viharaya
This is believed to be the place where Sri Lankan princess Vihara Maha Devi who sacrificed her self to safe guard her Kingdom from a curse (thsunami) landed. This claim is rivaled with kirinda in Southern province. Area is covered with sand dunes and ancient ruins of a temple. Few ancient statues can be seen inside the temple.
This temple is situated in Pottuvil town in Muhudu Maha Vihara Road and is easy to access.
2. Magul Maha Viharaya
This is believed to be the place where the aforementioned princess Vihara Maha Devi married the local king Kavantissa.
This is situated close to A4 highway and is easy to reach on the way to Arugam Bay Just before Pottuvil after passing Lahugala.
3. Lahugala kithulana Park
This is a forest reserve close to Arugam Bay and is famous for its elephants and is just few kilometres from Pottuvil
Apart from these you can visit various other places in Panama and Kumana Sanctuary like Kudumbigala, Elephant Rock Beach and Okanda Devalaya
